India stand on the verge of one of the most significant achievements in their 79-year Test history, as only mere formalities lie between them and a maiden series victory in Australia.

After completely outplaying their opposition in both Melbourne and Sydney, India need just roll through the home side one more time to claim an elusive 3-1 series victory in Australia.

For a nation obsessed with cricket, India's series win is easily their finest achievement under Virat Kohli's captaincy.

Even being ranked No.1 in the world, India haven't won a series outside of Asia or spin-friendly West Indies since 2008-09 in New Zealand.

In fact, the upcoming series victory in Australia will be just their sixth in 50 attempts in Europe, Africa and the Oceania.

In terms of their best, Kohli's triumph in Australia this summer likely isn't as high-ranking as their back-to-back efforts to defeat the West Indies and mighty England side on the road in 1971.

It was there that Sunil Gavaskar began his Test career, hitting 774 runs in his debut series in the Caribbean before India's spinners spun England into a web in that same year.

India's wins in England in 1986 and 2007 were also potentially more impressive, considering this is an Australian side on its knees without Steve Smith and David Warner.

Still, it breaks new ground for the touring squad, turning the tables on a team that has previously lost just four Test series at home in the past 25 years.

It could almost be described as an Australian-style victory.

They batted their opponents out of the game in Melbourne and Sydney before their quicks so often did the damage - sometimes with sharp spells of short-pitched bowling.

"We had come to Australia, previously, we knew how the wickets would be in Australia, very similar to the ones we got in South Africa," Indian bowling coach Bharat Arun said.

"So we drew upon all those experiences ..."
