The Indian community has gathered around the heartbroken parents of three-year-old Gurshan Singh whose body was found in long grass by the side of a road in Melbourne's north.
The youngster disappeared from his Lalor home around 1pm (AEDT) on Thursday and his body was discovered six hours later at a site about 30km away.
Gurshan's parents were being comforted by the head of the Federation of Indian Associations of Victoria, Vasan Srinivasan, as they sought refuge in a Thomastown house.

"It is a difficult time for them," Mr Srinivasan told AAP.
"Both of them are in tears, they don't know what to do.
"They have no idea how Gurshan went missing."
Mr Srinivasan said the Indian consul-general had also been contacted to try to assist the family as best it could.
