Indian man killed in public urination row

An Indian rickshaw driver has been fatally beaten allegedly by two men angered that he'd checked them for urinating in public.

An Indian rickshaw driver has been fatally beaten allegedly for stopping two young men urinating in public.

The incident took place on Saturday night when Ravinder Kumar, 34, objected to the pair relieving themselves on a road in northern New Delhi, police said.

Angry over his checking them, they threatened him and returned with a larger group to attack him with iron knuckles and towels filled with stones, area chief Anil Kumar Chauhan said.

Kumar did not have any visible injuries when he returned home but fell unconscious later in the night. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died on Sunday.

The Indian government has launched a major drive to stop people urinating and defecating in public.

Toilets have been built and awareness campaigns held across the country as part of the Swacch Bharat (Clean India in Hindi) campaign, which aims to improve the country's sanitation standards.

Senior minister M Venkaiah Naidu said he had spoken to the Delhi police chief Amulya Patnaik asking him to take the "strongest action possible against the culprits".

"The victim was an aware citizen who was promoting Swachh Bharat drive. It is sad and condemnable that such an incident has taken place," Naidu said.

Police said they were examining CCTV footage to identify suspects but no arrests had been made.
