After a series of high-profile rape cases, young Indians are using online social media like Facebook and Twitter to make their protests heard.

Ahuti Das works with Freedom From Fear, a travelling organisation that visits campuses to educate students and teachers about violence against women.

"If we need to pass on a message we usually used networks like the Facebook or Twitter, even. Just 140 characters can do a lot to mobilize people," she told CNN's Mallika Kapur.

Social media is growing rapidly in India with almost 65 million Facebook users today, up from just 8 million in 2010.

But while MP Priya Dutt applauds the use of social media by young people, she says it's not enough to just 'Like' a page or organisation. Miniter Dutt wants Indians to take their protests outside of the online world and begin real action.
