Indigenous artist inspired by 'blackbirding' stories

Daniel Boyd has become the first Indigenous man to win one of Australia's richest cultural accolades, the Bulgari Art Award.

Daniel Boyd has become the first Indigenous man to win one of Australia's richest cultural accolades, the Bulgari Art Award.

The Cairns-born, Sydney-based artist has received the $80,000 award for a work based on a 19th-century photo from Vanuatu.

Thea Cowie spoke with Mr Boyd about the personal nature of this painting.
