Seasonal wetlands that border Naree Station are a mecca for water birds and other wildlife, and they've recently been purchased by environmentalist group Bush Heritage Australia.
Naree Station is a 14,000 hectare property, north-west of Bourke, situated on floodplains between the Paroo and Warrego Rivers.
The channel country between the rivers is the historical home of the Budjiti people, several of whose elders have backed the move to turn the area into a privately run reserve.

But Bush Heritage says the new reserve and the wildlife haven within its boundaries could be vulnerable to potential water use changes upstream in Queensland.
That's if dormant extraction licences were to be put into operation on the Warrego River.
