With the federal election scheduled for September this year, there are only five sitting weeks left for politicians to examine the issues of constitutional recognition, before a possible change in government and a change in the committee.
But today it was back to the basic question of why governments make laws for Indigenous people.

They discussed the significance of mentioning "race" in the constitution and the practical application of the sections it appears in.
In February this year, the federal government passed the Act of Recognition, with a sunset clause of two years, "to allow the campaign for change to continue to build momentum and ensure the focus remains on the ultimate goal of a successful referendum," the government said then.
Tony Abbott has also indicated that if he were elected Prime Minister he would hold a referendum at around that same time.
