Plans for a $16.5 billion coal mine in Queensland's have been delayed by Indigenous protesters.

Plans for a $16.5 billion coal mine in Queensland's Galilee Basin have been delayed after traditional owners rejected an indigenous Land Use Agreement with the company involved.

Indian group Adani's Carmichael mine will be linked to the Abbot Point coal terminal, north of Bowen, by a 300-km rail line approved by the state government last year.

The project faces a legal challenge in Queensland's Land and Environment Court next week.

Adani has taken legal action to override the rejection, which could allow the current government to compulsorily acquire the land and issue a mining lease.

Adrian Burragubba from the Wangan and Jagalingou Family Council says his group opposes any existence of the mine in the Galilee Basin.
