Indonesia decision 'surprising' but highlights shift in relationship with Australia

An analyst of Australia's relationship with Indonesia says while Indonesia's decision to freeze some military cooperation with Australia is surprising but limited, it does indicate a shift in its relationship with Australia.

Indonesia's move follows concerns over allegedly offensive material seen at its training school in Perth.

Professor Tim Lindsey is director of the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society at the University of Melbourne's law school.

He says the relationship between Australian and Indonesia is often volatile, the most recent stoush being over wiretaps leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden, revealing that Australia spied on an American law firm representing Indonesia in a trade dispute with the United States in 2013.

Professor Lindsey says that matter caused a serious rift in the relationship but this incident is not yet at that level.

He's speaking here to Andrea Booth.
