The Indonesian government has reportedly rejected a key element of Tony Abbott's asylum seeker policy, saying it will not accept asylum seeker boats returned to its shores.

The Opposition Leader said yesterday Australian navy ships would be able to take the 'necessary steps' to turn asylum seeker boats back to Indonesia under coalition policy.

Senior Indonesian officials have made it clear they “will not tolerate” asylum seeker boats returned to its shores, the Sydney Morning Herald reported today.

The latest asylum seeker boat to be intercepted off Indonesian waters was towed to Christmas Island yesterday, carrying 160 people.
