An Australian halal certification organisation says slaughter methods revealed at Indonesian abattoirs this week, are not necessary or acceptable under Islamic law.

Live Australian cattle exports to Indonesia have been temporarily suspended, following revelations of animal cruelty at 11 abbattoirs.

Footage screened on the ABC showed cattle being beaten, their eyes gouged and dying prolonged and cruel deaths.

They were not stunned first as is the practice in Australian abattoirs, and in at least one instance cattle were forced to watch as fellow herd members were slaughtered.

Dr Mohammad Lotfi from Australian Halal Food Services told SBS that the treatment shown in Indonesia is unnecessary and inhumane.
