An Australian man faces a long wait in an Indonesian jail before his extradition to NSW to face drug charges.

The Denpasar District Court on Monday approved Australia's extradition request for Timothy Geoffrey Lee.

Lee, a dual Australian/British passport holder, was arrested in Bali at Australia's request last month.

Australian police want Lee, 44, to face charges of supplying a commercial quantity of prohibited drugs and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

The charges relate to Operation Lanyard, a NSW police operation that seized drugs with an estimated street value of $30 million in 2006.

But despite the court's decision, Lee will be forced to wait in custody for up to a year until Indonesia's president gives final approval.

Lee's lawyer, Erwin Siregar, had wanted Australia to abandon its extradition request because Lee was prepared to return and face trial voluntarily.

Lee claims he is innocent.
