Indonesian ferry sinking, 50 rescued

A ferry is sinking in the waters of Indonesia's Bali Strait, with a rescue operation ongoing; more than 50 people have been rescued so far

A passenger ferry carrying more than 50 people is sinking in waters between the Indonesian islands of Bali and Java.

Muhammad Arifin, head of East Java's search and rescue agency, says more than 50 people have been rescued.

But he doesn't know if all on board are accounted for. He says the agency is trying to obtain the ferry's manifest.

MetroTV showed the ferry on its side in calm waters in Bali Strait. The vessel was en route from Gilimanuk port in Bali to Banyawangi on Java.

Two people were believed missing, said Johan Saptadi, the head of the Search and Rescue Agency in East Java.

The Revalia II was carrying passengers and large vehicles when it started taking on water, Johan said.
