Federal Industry Minister Arthur Sinodinos has stepped aside to take sick leave.

The minister said in a statement he hopes to resume his full duties later this year after dealing with an undisclosed medical issue.

His Senate colleague Michaelia Cash will take responsibility for his industry, innovation and science portfolios in his absence.

"I ask for privacy for myself and my family at this time," he said.
