Infrastructure spending aids manufacturing

The manufacturing sector has been given a lift from public infrastructure spending, although lacklustre consumer spending remains a constraint.

Australia's manufacturing sector is benefiting from an upswing in government infrastructure spending, stronger world growth and a relatively low Australian dollar supporting exports, a new report shows.

The latest Westpac-Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry industrial trends survey shows manufacturing has steadily expanded since 2014, quickly recovering from a dip that occurred during last year's federal election.

"However, there are some negatives - consumer spending is lacklustre, constrained by slow wage growth, while offshore competition in the manufacturing sector continues to be intense," Westpac senior economist Andrew Hanlan says.
