Victorian spinner Jon Holland has been ruled out of this month's domestic one-day cup cricket tournament and has returned to Melbourne.

Holland, who has played two Tests for Australia against Sri Lanka, had experienced discomfort in his knee after training. It flared up during a Bushrangers' net session on Tuesday in Perth.

Holland underwent minor surgery on Wednesday to reduce some swelling on his right knee and is expected to miss two-four weeks while recovering.

Cricket Victoria's Nick Adcock said the injury was simply a case of wear and tear and the medical team had taken a precautionary approach.

"Jon reported some discomfort in his right knee following training last week. Initial scans proved inconclusive but Jon continued to feel some discomfort while bowling in Perth and we decided surgery would be the best option ahead of the season."

Veteran legspinner Fawad Ahmed will replace Holland in the squad, who are in Perth preparing for their first cup fixture on Sunday against Western Australia.

Ahmed becomes the second injury replacement for Victoria. Xavier Crone was announced on Tuesday as John Hastings' replacement, after the pace bowler injured his back last week at training.
