St Kilda duo Dylan Roberton and Paddy McCartin have been released from hospital but concerns remain about their wellbeing.

McCartin was concussed for the eighth time in his career in Sunday's AFL pre-season game against Western Bulldogs in Ballarat.

And Roberton, who is on the comeback trail from a heart irregularity, was also hospitalised after feeling unwell late in the game.

Both players have been discharged from hospital in Ballarat and returned home, St Kilda's football manager Simon Lethlean says.

McCartin and Roberton will be closely monitored, with their short-term prognosis unclear.

Roberton, who collapsed with a heart irregularity in a game in Geelong in round four last year, wears an electronic device on his chest to monitor his heart's activity.

After reporting feeling unwell during Sunday's game, he was taken from the field.

"Dylan was monitored overnight in hospital and back home today," Lethlean told the club's website.

"We'll know more in the next few days as to what caused him to feel unwell and what the prognosis is from here."

McCartin was taken out of the trial game after copping a head knock in the second quarter.

"As with every concussion, it's now just about his symptoms as to how quickly he'll be back on the track," Lethlean said.

"Given his history of head knocks, it goes without saying that we'll take a cautious approach."
