Injuries mar Giants AFL pre-season win

Greater Western Sydney have suffered a number of injuries on their way to a 38-point AFL pre-season win over North Melbourne in Canberra.

Greater Western Sydney coach Leon Cameron faces a nervous weekend as he awaits the results of injuries to midfield star Stephen Coniglio and key defender Aidan Corr in Friday's 38-point AFL pre-season win over North Melbourne.

Coniglio (ankle), Corr (hand) and veteran forward Steve Johnson (concussion) were all forced out of the game in Canberra, where the Giants won 2.15.17 (125) to 0.12.15 (87).

The near-full strength Giants kicked seven goals to two in a decisive third-quarter blitz but the injuries to Coniglio and Corr and a report on Giants forward Jeremy Cameron, for striking Scott Thompson, were major talking points.

Cameron said he expected Johnson to be okay but didn't expect to know until Monday the full extent of the injuries to Coniglio and Corr.

He said the injury to prolific ball winner Coniglio didn't look great but appeared to be a ligament rather than bone issue.

Outside of the injuries, GWS showed in the second half plenty of the attacking potency that had contributed to them being touted as premiership favourites.

All Australian half-forward Toby Greene was outstanding, kicking five goals, setting up at least a couple of others and gathering 26 possessions.

Devon Smith kicked four goals and Cameron three.

"We regrouped at halftime and talked about our ball movement, which wasn't the greatest," Leon Cameron said.

"Our attack on the footy needed to be a bit better and some of the guys who were probably struggling through the first half started to get their hands on the footy and play some okay footy.

"You walk away happy that the second half was better but we need to be going a little bit better."

Key forward Jarrad Waite was a standout for the Kangaroos, kicking five goals and racking up 10 marks and 19 disposals.

Shaun Higgins was also impressive for the Roos, racking up 14 possessions and testing the Giants' defence on numerous occasions before being rested for the second half.

"The result was probably secondary, how we went about it was the main thing and that was pleasing," Kangaroos coach Brad Scott said.

"Our defensive unity was poor for that third quarter and it cost us."
