Injury forces Vescio out of AFLW Origin

The women's State of Origin match on September 2 will feature a star-studded lineup, despite the absence of Erin Phillips and Darcy Vescio.

A knee injury has forced Carlton star Darcy Vescio out of the Victorian team for the AFLW State Of Origin match.

Vescio suffered a PCL injury last weekend while playing for Darebin in the VWFL.

She has undergone scans and hopes to play for Darebin in next month's local finals.

But she is the most notable name missing from the final Victorian lineup for the September 2 Origin match at Etihad Stadium.

Vescio was the leading goalkicker in the inaugural AFLW season and is one of the league's marquee players.

The other big name missing from the match will be Adelaide star Erin Phillips, who won the AFL best and fairest award.

While Vescio's unavailability is new, it was known that Phillips would be unavailable because of her WNBA commitments.

Otherwise the match will feature a top lineup including women's stars such as Daisy Pearce, Lauren Arnell, Brianna Davey, Steph Chiocci and Katie Brennan.

Of the top 10 in the AFLW best and fairest voting, seven of them will play in the match.

Adelaide star Sarah Perkins and Carlton's Tayla Harris will have added incentive to unleash their long bombs at goal in the State of Origin game.

It will feature nine-point supergoals from outside 50m, a regular feature of the men's pre-season matches.

The Origin match is a feature of the AFL's bye round for the men before the finals.

Entry will be free and that will continue to be the case for AFLW matches next season.
