A once-in-a-generation flood has residents in the NSW central western town of Forbes preparing to evacuate their homes.
The flood is expected to be the worst to hit the town since 132 houses were damaged in 1990, as recent heavy rains have saturated large parts of inland NSW.
The Lachlan River peaked at 10.65m 26 years ago at Forbes and is expected to reach 10.6m on Sunday.
The SES has advised residents to prepare for evacuation and has put out a call for volunteers to help sandbag in the area.
Six other towns and farming areas in the region are also facing major flood warnings.
Two more rivers in inland NSW have major warnings in place, with three small towns on the Macquarie and Bogan rivers braced for serious flooding.
Parts of the Riverina are also experiencing moderate flooding along the Murrumbidgee River with a lot of water around Griffith and West Wyalong.
The SES has already performed 86 flood rescues and dealt with about 2000 calls for assistance.
Around 170 people in the Ungarie area were forced to leave their properties on Thursday following heavy rainfall and water flowing into the Humbug Creek.
Major regional road links including a stretch of the Newell Highway have been closed.
The SES is reminding drivers not to drive through flood waters and imploring those planning on travelling to the bush for school holidays to check road closures and flood alerts.
Farmers in flood affected regions are nervously waiting to see what the damage to crops will be once the waters eventually recede, a NSW Farmers spokesman said.
The weather bureau is predicting two more rain bands for the region late next week.
