A prisoner is in a critical condition after being stabbed in a brawl at a maximum security jail in Sydney.

A Corrective Services spokeswoman said the 23-year-old man was attacked with an implement made in the jail in a fight between five inmates at the Lithgow Correctional Centre on Friday.

The man was flown to hospital with puncture wounds to his neck while the other four inmates were segregated.

A Westmead Hospital spokeswoman said on Sunday the prisoner was in a critical but stable condition.

No charges have yet been laid in relation to the brawl.
