A parliamentary inquiry will examine the operation and management of the new public-private Northern Beaches Hospital.

Opposition health spokesman Walt Secord successfully moved for an inquiry in the upper house on Thursday, telling parliament the hospital had "lurched from crisis to crisis" since it opened in 2018.

He said patients and medical staff had reported a litany of problems including a lack of basic medical supplies.

But Liberals MP Natasha Maclaren-Jones said the motion was borne out of cynicism and aimed at using the hospital as a political football.

A parliamentary committee will now examine the running of the hospital, including standards of service provision and care, staffing and the merits of public-private partnership arrangements in healthcare.

Mr Secord said it would have power to subpoena witnesses and documents.

Ms Maclaren-Jones, the parliamentary secretary for health, told parliament during the motion that every new hospital had its settling-in challenges.

"There is nothing more complex in a state government build than a 21st-century hospital," she said.

She said staff had as recently as last weekend expressed satisfaction to the health minister that journalists had stopped reporting negatively on the facility.

They felt they were not only positively supported but that their work was being appreciated, Ms Maclaren-Jones said.
