Instagram unveils new app icon look

Instagram has dropped the curtain to reveal a new look for the app icon and its features including Boomerang, Layout and Hyperlapse.

Instagram has been given a fresh coat of paint with the launch of the application's newly designed icon features.

The mobile photo, video and social networking service dropped the curtain on its brown camera icon on Thursday, revealing a bright rainbow gradient with a simple camera silhouette.

According to the designer the new look has a more "welcoming" edge but has still held on to some of its favourite features.

"The rainbow is something that people really loved about the existing app icon so we wanted to bring that over in some way," head of design Ian Spalter told AAP.

"People say when they first see it, it looks like the sunset picture everyone tried to take on Instagram. So it makes a lot of sense," he added.

The design change marks the fourth official Instagram icon since the company launched six years ago.

Users can see not only a new app icon on Instagram but also updated app icons for editing apps Boomerang, Layout and Hyperlapse.

The homepage also looks a little different with a simpler design enforced to steer eyes towards the photos and videos created by users.

"We did this so that all the stuff that people create comes over ... and the content is able to shine more," the designer said.

Android phones and iOS have a few subtle differences in design with Mr Spalter explaining the team attempted to make the app "feel more native to the specific platforms".

"It is a big change for folks. It looks different but you can still use Instagram in the same way," he said.

"There are more text labels, the proportions are slightly different but all the functionality is the same, we just re-painted the room."
