The federal government is urging organisations and religious orders to sign up to the national redress scheme for people who experienced child sexual abuse in institutions, with hundreds yet to join.
Minister for Families and Social Services Paul Fletcher says many abuse survivors are waiting for organisations to sign up to the scheme so they can access the support and acknowledgement owed to them.
A further 10 organisations - including six Anglican institutions and Geelong Grammar School - have joined the scheme, Mr Fletcher said on Thursday.
"While this announcement will be welcome news for some survivors, many others are still waiting, some of them ageing or unwell," the minister said.
"So I reiterate my call for non-government institutions to join the scheme."
The Department of Social Services was in the process of signing up a number of other institutions, he added.
The scheme can offer counselling, a direct response from responsible institutions and a redress payment.
It opened on July 1 but many survivors have been waiting for institutions to join before they could lodge their claims
