The federal government has been coy on the cost, but the budget reveals for the first time just how expensive the scheme's mistakes have proven.
The insulation scheme was linked with the deaths of four installers, 120 house fires, and quality and safety problems potentially affecting hundreds of thousands of homes.
Add to that a hefty price tag of $439 million to fix the scheme's mistakes.
Of that total, the budget papers show it will cost $339 million to inspect and fix 150,000 homes fitted out with pink batts under the scheme, which has now been axed.

$84 million will be spent on checking out 50,000 roofs fitted with foil insulation, and $15 million goes to help insulation installers cope with the scheme's sudden end.
And the cost could rise as legal action could be taken against the government by installers or households.
Last year, the government decided to spent $2.45 billion insulating millions of homes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and to stimulate the economy in tough times.
But the scheme went wrong. 1.1 million homes had been insulated at a cost of about $1.5 billion when the scheme was canned in February due to safety problems, as dodgy operators flooded the market.
The troubled insulation scheme has been linked with the federal government's recent sharp drop in the opinion polls.
