The number of jobs advertised on the internet in January grew faster than in the previous two Januarys, indicating that employers were feeling more confident, according to the latest Olivier Job Index.
The index rose 3.5 per cent in January. Vacancies were now up 14.02 per cent in the past six months but still down 22.13 per cent since this time last year.
Olivier Group director Robert Olivier said December and January were always volatile months for jobs, so the data had to be interpreted cautiously.
Employer confidence
"But the signs are clear, new jobs are being advertised," Mr Olivier said.
"These results suggest employers remained confident, despite widespread fears of another interest rate rise."
Vacancies for full-time and part-time positions rose but casual vacancies fell.
Jobs in human resources, training, administration and marketing rose, which indicated that confidence was returning.
Trades and services jobs lifted 10.39 per cent, growing well in Western Australia and Queensland.
Accounting fairing badly
Accounting was the worst performing sector, dropping 8.58 per cent.
Jobs in law and information technology were flat.
Western Australia showed the strongest growth among the states - up 7.47 per cent, powered by strength in the resources sector.
The Olivier Job Index surveyed 127,823 positions vacant on commercial job sites on average each week in January.
