A film in part inspired by an Australian man's German ancestry is being released worldwide this month.

"The Book Thief" is based on a novel by Markus Zusak, who was born in Australia to German parents.

It tells the story of a girl living in Germany in 1939 who loves books, stealing them from wherever she can, including Nazi book-burnings.

Her love of words is encouraged by a young Jewish man who her foster parents hide from the authorities in their cellar.

Markus Zusak told SBS German broadcaster Oliver Heuthe the stories his parents told him had a profound impact.
