A man was shot in the leg during an alleged break and enter in NSW after he was confronted by the property's 58-year-old owner.

An intruder was shot in the leg during an alleged violent break and enter near Lake Macquarie in NSW after he struggled with the owner.

The 58-year-old owner of the Teralba property was alerted to his shed allegedly being broken into by his dogs barking and confronted three men in the early hours of Saturday morning, NSW police say.

A firearm was discharged during an ensuing scuffle and a 30-year-old man was found after fleeing the scene with a gunshot wound to his leg.
