IOC pays tribute to Lomu

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach says All Blacks great Jonah Lomu was an icon for rugby fans around the world.

Jonah Lomu has changed the face of modern rugby, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said in honouring the All Blacks great on Thursday.

The 63-Test winger, who had battled kidney disorders for two decades, died at his Auckland home on Wednesday from complications related to the disease. He was 40.

"He was an icon not just for New Zealand fans but for all rugby fans around the world," Bach said.

"It is sad that he did not live to see the sport return to the Olympic Games next year in Rio de Janeiro."

New Zealand Olympic Committee chief executive Kereyn Smith also acknowledged Lomu's contribution to the Olympic movement and Commonwealth Games sport.

She said he had played a key role in supporting rugby's successful bid for a spot in its sevens format on the Olympic program from 2016.

"He went on to inspire young people all around the world with his achievements on the field of play as well as his determination, warmth and humility."
