Syria says Iran has congratulated the war-torn nation on its victory in Aleppo.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has congratulated Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on a victory in "liberated Aleppo", Syria's presidency says.

Rouhani said this was an important step towards "wiping out terrorism in Syria", the presidency's Twitter account and state media reported.

Iran is a key military ally of Damascus.
