Iranian movie "A Separation" won the best foreign language film award at the Golden Globes, beating rivals from China, Spain and Belgium, as well as Angelina Jolie's directoral debut.

The movie by writer/director Asghar Farhadi tells the story of a married couple facing the dilemma of whether to leave Iran for the sake of their family.

It was up against "The Flowers of War" from China, Belgian movie "The Kid with Bike" ("Le Gamin au Velo"), and "The Skin I Live In" ("La piel que habito") by Spanish veteran Pedro Almodovar.

Hollywood megastar Jolie's first film as director "In the Land of Blood and Honey," set in Bosnia-Hercegovina, was also on the foreign language shortlist as it was and shot bilingually in English and Serbo-Croat.

'THE DESCENDANTS' WINS BEST DRAMA FILM

Family drama "The Descendants" starring George Clooney won the top best picture prize at the Golden Globe awards.

Hollywood veteran Clooney also won the best actor Globe for his performance in the Hawaii-based family drama, which had been nominated in five categories overall.

"Homeland" has won best TV drama series, beating "Game of Thrones".

'THE ARTIST' GETS THREE AWARDS

French-directed silent film "The Artist" won the Golden Globe for best musical or comedy film, its third award of the night.

The black-and-white movie, which had garnered the most nominations with nods in six categories, also won best actor for Jean Dujardin and best score for Ludovic Bource.

STREEP, WILLIAMS, WINSLET GET ACTING GLOBES

Meryl Streep won best actress for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady".

Michelle Williams earned the Golden Globe for actress in a musical or comedy as Marilyn Monroe in "My Week with Marilyn", 52 years after Monroe's win for the same prize at the Globes.

Williams offered thanks for giving her the same award Monroe once won and joked that her young daughter put up with bedtime stories for six months spoken in Monroe's voice.

"I consider myself a mother first and an actress second, so the person I most want to thank is my daughter, my little girl, whose bravery and exuberance is the example I take with me in my work and my life," Williams said of Matilda, her daughter with late Australian actor Heath Ledger.

Kate Winslet won best actress in a TV movie or mini-series for the HBO project "Mildred Pierce."

Kelsey Grammer won best actor in a TV drama series for "Boss".

Idris Elba won best actor in a mini-series / TV movie for "Luther", while Peter Dinklage won best supporting actor in a TV movie or mini-series.

ALLEN WINS SCREENPLAY HONOUR

Woody Allen won the screenplay honour for his romantic fantasy "Midnight in Paris", the filmmaker's biggest hit in decades.

Never a fan of movie awards, Allen was a no-show at the Globes, where he previously won the screenplay honour for 1985's" The Purple Rose of Cairo".

Steven Spielberg snagged a Golden Globe when his movie "The Adventures of Tintin" was named the year's best animated feature.
