Iran's Rafsanjani loses post as chair of state body

Iran's former president and powerful cleric Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on Tuesday lost a key regime post when he was replaced as head of the body which oversees the work of the supreme leader, media said.

Iranian news agencies said former premier Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Mahdavi Kani, 80, was elected as the head of Assembly of Experts, the 86-member body which selects the supreme leader and supervises his activities.

Rafsanjani had headed the post for the past four years.
