Iraqi authorities have executed 42 people convicted under the country's terrorism law, the Justice Ministry says.

The executions were carried out after final court rulings that were endorsed by the head of the state, the ministry added in a statement.

Those executed were convicted in different cases of killing security forces and involvement in terrorist attacks, the statement said without giving further details.

Iraq is engaged in a US-backed campaign aimed at recapturing vast swathes of its territory from the Islamic State extremist militia.
