Iraqi forces have captured a key bridge in the northern city of Mosul, as they made further advances in the western part of the city against the Islamic State militia.
The US-backed forces took over the 4th Bridge across the Tigris River, which divides the city between east and west, Federal Police Chief Lieutenant-General Raed Shaker Jawdat said.
Military forces began crossing from the liberated eastern part of the city to the western part, Jawdat told DPA.
The 4th Bridge is the most southern of five main bridges the span the river in Mosul.
Earlier on Monday, the forces recaptured Tayyaran neighbourhood, located close to the bridge, as they battle to drive IS from their last key Iraqi stronghold.
On February 19, the government launched a major offensive to dislodge Islamic State from the western section of Mosul, almost a month after they forced the hardliners out of the eastern side of the city.
Islamic State seized Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, in mid-2014.
