Irma devastates Caribbean islands

Hurricane Irma has left a trail of devastation acroos the popular resort islands of the Caribbea.

HOW THE CARIBBEAN ISLANDS FARED IN IRMA:

ANGUILLA

- One death reported

- widespread damage to electricity infrastructure, water supply, government buildings and other structures

- airport runway has been cleared of debris

ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA

- In Barbuda, 90 per cent of buildings severely damaged

- government encouraging residents to evacuate to sister island of Antigua ahead of Hurricane Jose

- about 60 per cent of 1400 people have been left homeless

- 2-year-old child killed as a family tried to escape damaged home during storm

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

- Four deaths reported

- major damage to largest and most-populated island of Tortola

- report of looting

- billionaire Richard Branson, who was his home on private Necker island, says entire houses have disappeared and the area is "completely and utterly devastated"

CUBA

- Thousands of tourists evacuated from low-lying keys off coast

- government moved tens of thousands of people from vulnerable coastline

PUERTO RICO

- About a million people without power

- spared a direct hit

ST BARTS

- Roofs ripped off and electricity out; cars and boats strewn about the island

- French interior minister says most of the schools destroyed on St Barts and St Martin and "we'll need to rebuild both islands"

ST MARTIN

- Homes splintered, schools destroyed

- at least five dead

- cafes and clothing shops of seaside village Marigot submerged in floodwaters

- reports of looting

- government anticipates serious housing shortage

TURKS AND CAICOS

- Communications went down early on Friday and extent of damage unclear

US VIRGIN ISLANDS

- Four deaths reported

- officials on St Thomas expect to find more bodies

- crews struggle to reopen roads and restore power

- hospital on St Thomas destroyed; dozens of patients being evacuated to St Croix and Puerto Rico by US Coast Guard

- harbour in ruins, along with hundreds of homes and dozens of businesses.
