IS 'claims attack' on Egyptian cathedral

The Aamaq Agency media outlet says the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a suicide attack that killed 23 people at a church in Cairo.

The Islamic State extremist group has claimed responsibility for a suicide attack that killed 23 people during Mass two days earlier at a church adjoining Cairo's main cathedral, the group's Aamaq Agency media outlet says.

The bombing, in the complex that houses the seat of Pope Tawadros II, head of Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Church, was one of the worst ever on a Christian place of worship in majority-Muslim Egypt.

The victims were buried on Monday after a funeral mass celebrated by Tawadros and a military ceremony headed by President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi.
