Islamic State militants have killed 10 Afghan police officers and the wife of a police commander in northern Jawzjan.
Afghan Local Police commander Shah Mahmood was ambushed along with nine other officers on Friday as they were coming out of a mosque in Sardar village of Darzab district, provincial government spokesman Mohammad Reza Ghafori confirmed.
Ghafori added that "the wife of the police commander was shot and killed when she rushed to the scene".
Government officials have blamed the attack on IS militants. However, the Taliban already claimed responsibility.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Twitter the group killed ALP commanders Shah Mahmood and Naeem along with eight others and captured the village.
Since its emergence in Afghanistan, IS militants have been confined to the country's eastern provinces - most notably in Nangarhar - and have carried out attacks in the capital Kabul but have little presence in northern Afghanistan.
In a separate attack, two school students were killed when a rocket fired by Taliban militants hit a school in Afghanistan's eastern Laghman province on Saturday morning.
"Seven others including a teacher were wounded," a statement by the governor's office said.
The rocket fired from the direction of Basram in Alingar district hit a classroom in Shaheed Mawlave Habiburrahman high school.
The wounded were immediately taken to a hospital and their condition is stable, added the statement.
