The average American cattleman is 61 years old and with rising costs of land and low profits there are less and less young people getting into the business, with only 12 per cent of cowboys under the age of 45.
Of the 3,900 family ranches left in Wyoming, less than 2000 make $50,000 a year in sales according to the United States Department of Agriculture, providing little incentive for young people to take up the profession.
Modern day cowboy's have had to adapt to the times to stay in business, using smartphones to keep track of the cattle markets and four-wheel drives instead of horses.
