Israel halts truce talks as rockets fly

Israel has halted truce talks in Cairo saying they will not negotiate under fire.

Israel has pulled out of talks in Cairo on extending a Gaza truce with Hamas after a 72-hour ceasefire ended and violence resumed.

"Israel will not negotiate under fire," the official said on condition of anonymity, noting Israel had informed Egypt of its willingness to extend the truce by another three days before "Hamas breached the ceasefire".

Hamas had announced that all Palestinian factions agreed not to renew the ceasefire which ended at 1500 AEST, blaming Israel for "refusing to accommodate our demands" while stressing talks with Egyptian mediators were continuing in Cairo.

Even before the deadline, two rockets had struck Israel, the army said.

After the truce expired, Gaza militants fired over 33 rockets and mortar shells at the Jewish state, wounding a soldier and a civilian, it said.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the army to retaliate "forcefully", with a series of strikes, which Gaza medics said killed a child and wounded six other Palestinians.

"Before dawn, even before the truce Hamas committed to was over, fire was opened at Israel," the official said.

Another Israeli official said earlier that the Israeli negotiators had left Cairo prior to the end of the 72-hour truce.
