Palestinian rival factions Fatah and Hamas have struck a deal to share power, but the Israeli government says the Palestinian Authority must choose between peace with Israel and peace with Hamas.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the deal.

"The Palestinian Authority must choose between peace with Israel and peace with Hamas. Peace with both is impossible because of the Hamas goal of destroying the state of Israel, which it expresses openly," he said.

"It fires rockets at our cities and fires rockets at our children as well. I believe the whole concept of reconciliation shows the weakness of the Palestinian Authority and raises questions about whether Hamas will take control of Judea and Samaria (West Bank) as it took control of Gaza.

"I hope the Palestinian Authority will make the right choice and choose peace with Israel. The choice is in its hands."
