Israel steps up cross-border tunnel offensive

Israeli troops have turned their attention to destroying a network of tunnels running from Gaza into southern Israel as their bloody conflict with Hamas militants heads into its 23rd day.

Gaza tunnels
The ongoing conflict has left more than 1000 Palestinians and 55 Israelis dead since fighting began earlier this month.

One of the Israelis' main stated objectives is to destroy the tunnels, which allow Hamas militants to attack Israeli communities and soldiers.

It's reported that more than 30 tunnels have been found, some of which are thought to have take years to build.

The ongoing conflict has sent the death toll from the violence skyrocketing.

More than 100 Palestinians are said to have been killed in Israeli air strikes on Gaza, which have reportedly been targeting sites associated with Hamas.

Since the current conflict began, more than a thousand Palestinians and 55 Israelis - most of them soldiers - have been killed.

Israel's Prime Minister has warned that the conflict will continue as long as Hamas threatens his country.

As the Gaza conflict intensified, the US Secretary of State John Kerry has warned that the situation could "spiral downwards" and neither side would find it easy to step back.

The Israelis said they were determined to step up the pressure on Hamas until the organisation "no longer posed a threat".
