Israeli troops stop suicide bomber

A Palestinian suicide bomber has been caught at a checkpoint inside the occupied West Bank, the Israeli military says.

The Israeli military says a Palestinian suicide bomber has been caught at a checkpoint inside the occupied West Bank.

Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner said troops suspected the man on Friday because he was wearing a heavy coat on a hot day.

Soldiers called on the man to stop and a search revealed explosives strapped around his torso. He told the soldiers he had intended to carry out a suicide bombing.

It was unclear if the man was acting alone or if he belonged to an armed group like Hamas or Islamic Jihad, which carried out scores of suicide bombings in the years after the 2000 uprising.

Lerner said it has been years since a suicide bomber was detained, but Palestinian shooting and knife attacks are common in the area.
