Browsing Google Earth has become a real time-killer for many an amateur geographer.

And now, the International Space Station has added a stunning addition to the body of satellite images, with a photo of Italy taken at night.

The image is taken from the domed Cupola attached to the underside of the station, the BBC reports, a spot which has become the hang out place of choice for up to two astronauts seeking some downtime.

At 350km above the earth, Italy's 'boot' is easily visible, while part of the Russian spacecraft docked to the station is visible in the foreground.

Built for the European Space Agency and then shipped to the US to be added, NASA has branded the space the 'ultimate observation deck.'
