It's official. Director Paul Feig has confirmed he will write Ghostbusters 3 alongside The Heat screenwriter Kate Dippold. The latest installment is likely to be a complete franchise reboot, and will reportedly star an all-female cast.
"I'm making a new Ghostbusters and writing it with @katiedippold," he tweeted on Wednesday. "It will star hilarious women. That's who I'm gonna call."
Feig is best known for directing comedy hits Bridesmaids (Kristen Wiig) and The Heat (Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy). He has also written episodes for television shows Arrested Development, The Office, Weeds, Parks and Recreation, and Nurse Jackie. Dippold wrote the screenplay for The Heat, and has also written for MadTV and Parks and Recreation.
The 1984 blockbuster classic Ghostbusters, starring Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, the late Harold Ramis, Sigourney Weaver and Ernie Hudson, told the story of a crack team of scientists who launched their own small business capturing ghosts. The sequel was released in 1989.
The third Ghostbusters film had been rumoured since the 1990s, when actor and co-writer Dan Akroyd penned a script, which unfortunately failed to rouse interest. Sony Pictures had been trying to lock in a third movie for years, according to The Hollywood Reporter, but actor Bill Murray was reportedly reluctant to be involved. When Ghostbusters actor and co-writer Harold Ramis died earlier this year, original director Ivan Reitman stepped down as director, and the project was stalled once again. Reitman said he would "rather just produce" the film.
Sony is reportedly planning to film Ghostbusters 3 in 2015 in New York City.
