Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says it's time for an Australian republic.

Wednesday marks the 40th anniversary of Gough Whitlam's dismissal which coincides with a visit to Canberra by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

"Now we have a republican prime minister and a republican as leader of the opposition, I'm certainly keen and look forward with Malcolm Turnbull to provide much needed momentum," Mr Shorten told reporters.
