Jack joins veterans on Swans' injury list

Kieren Jack has been sidelined with a hip injury, joining fellow veterans Jarrad McVeigh, Heath Grundy and Nick Smith on the Sydney Swans injury list.

Former captain Kieren Jack has joined a stack of Sydney's most experienced players on the AFL club's injury list.

Jack, who made a delayed start to the season because of off-season knee surgery and is off-contract at the end of 2019, will miss Saturday's SCG derby because of a hip problem.

The Swans were already sorely missing the on-field guidance of injured veterans Jarrad McVeigh, Heath Grundy and Nick Smith - who boast a combined 789 games worth of experience.

Jack's setback comes a week after the one-club man made his 250th appearance, and follows hip injuries that threatened to derail both his 2017 and 2018 campaigns.

"Unfortunately he had a collision last week and his hip, which has troubled him at various times over the past few years, flared up again," Swans coach John Longmire said.

"Hopefully it's only a short-term one. We'll see how he pulls up next week."

Jack attempted to play through the pain of a restrictive hip problem early in 2017 but the injury worsened and his form dipped.

The midfielder was restricted to 19 games in both 2017 and 2018.

Jack didn't play this year until round four, with the on-baller instead building his match fitness in the NEAFL following a restricted pre-season.

"I've certainly got some challenges for the rest of my career now," Jack said last week.

"I think there's still an ability to perform a role and make sure I manage it well.

"I've trained pretty hard the last two months. I got going really slow after the knee operation, which was a little unexpected. I feel fit and strong.

"One thing I was able to do was a lot of gym work to strengthen up my legs and hips."

The Swans' depth is also being tested by the injury-enforced absence of ruckman Sam Naismith and former Geelong forward Daniel Menzel.
