Jake Carlisle has continued his rocky start at AFL club St Kilda, this time arriving late for training.

The Saints have confirmed the key position player broke team rules by turning up late to a Tuesday session.

That meant an early-morning training session the next morning for Carlisle and his teammates.

Carlisle is training with players who have been in the AFL for one to four years, the first group to return for pre-season work.

News of the punishment session is just what Carlisle did not need after the circumstances surrounding his high-profile trade from Essendon to the Saints.

Only hours after the trade was confirmed last month, video became public of Carlisle snorting an unidentified white substance while on an overseas holiday.

The Saints are furious and Carlisle will miss the first two games of next season.

He also has voluntarily recorded a first strike under the AFL's illicit drugs policy.

It is understood that since starting with the Saints, Carlisle had been going out of his way to make a good impression until arriving late for the training session.
