Jantjies doubt for Boks against Wallabies

South Africa are sweating on the fitness of gun five eighth Elton Jantjies as they prepare to meet the Wallabies in a clash where both teams have a lot to prove.

Jantjies is nursing a deep thigh cork which forced him from the field as the Springboks suffered a demoralising 26-24 away defeat to Argentina at the weekend.

A decision on his availability for the next Rugby Championship assignment against the Wallabies at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium on September 10 won't be made till next week.

Jantjies has been included in the touring squad for the upcoming matches against Australia and New Zealand while utility Francois Hougaard and winger Lwazi Mvovo are additions.

Mvovo replaces Lions star Ruan Combrinck, who fractured his fibula against Argentina while Hougaard has recovered from a knee injury incurred at the Rio Olympics sevens.

Like his Wallabies counterpart Michael Cheika, new Springboks coach Allister Coetzee is under pressure after a poor start to the international season, having lost a home series against Ireland 1-2 before splitting their two opening Rugby Championship Tests with Argentina.

He'll come up against an Australian squad hurting after their 3-0 home series loss to England and back-to-back spankings from the All Blacks.

Coetzee resisted any urge to make other changes to his squad.

"We are not happy with where we find ourselves after the first two matches of the campaign," said Coetzee.

"Australia will pose an even tougher challenge, and it is important that we deliver a much-improved performance in Brisbane."

Springboks squad: Lourens Adriaanse, Damian de Allende, Lood de Jager, Juan de Jongh, Faf de Klerk, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Eben Etzebeth, Johan Goosen, Bryan Habana, Francois Hougaard, Elton Jantjies, Steven Kitshoff, Vincent Koch, Jaco Kriel, Jesse Kriel, Francois Louw, Lionel Mapoe, Malcolm Marx, Bongi Mbonambi, Oupa Mohoje, Franco Mostert, Tendai Mtawarira, Lwazi Mvovo, Trevor Nyakane, Rudy Paige, Morne Steyn, Adriaan Strauss, Warren Whiteley.
