The Sea Shepherd conservationist group claims the Japanese whaling fleet has ended its season in Antarctica.

It says a signal from a Japanese vessel, the Nishin Maru, was picked up travelling on a northerly course from the Southern Ocean, with its destination set for Japan.

Sea Shepherd ships have spent the past two months hampering and chasing the Japanese whaling fleet.

Captain Siddharth Chakravarty told Samantha Yap why the group is confident the Japanese are leaving.
