The unemployment rate in Japan fell one-tenth in January to 3.2 per cent.
The number of unemployed people in January was 2.11 million, representing a drop of 200,000 individuals or 8.7 per cent compared with the same month in 2015, according to figures released by the Ministry of Interior and Communications on Tuesday.
The number of employed people increased by 900,000, or 1.4 per cent, compared with January 2015 and reached 63.99 million.
The data shows a lower unemployment rate than economists expected and reconfirms the continuation of a tight labour market.
In other data released on Tuesday, the average monthly expenditure of households with two or more residents fell 3.1 per cent year on year to 280,973 yen ($A3,486).

In turn, the average household income per employee in January stood at Y434,330, down 1.3 percent on the same month in 2015.
